A variable bale size with constant performance - these are the outstanding features of the VARIANT round balers from CLAAS.
  • 83" wide pickup
  • Bale diameter 36" to 68"
Pickup
A huge appetite
The extra wide 83" pick-up (75" according to DIN standards) is a CLAAS feature you don't find on any other round baler. The purpose of the extra width is to enable the widest swaths to be picked up cleanly and thoroughly. If the swaths are smaller, the driver has the much easier job of turning them into well-shaped bales. A high-speed helical feed rotor behind the pick-up ensures that the crop is fed consistently to the bale chamber, even if it is in clumps, dry or short, and damp conditions.
Feeding System

Better performance with a rotor
The standard feed rotor, or chopping rotor on the ROTO CUT model, ensures an exceptionally fast and reliable fill level of the baling chamber. As a result, a larger volume of crop can be processed in the same time, allowing the VARIANT to be driven at extraodrinarily high working speeds.

The rotor starts the bale
With all VARIANT balers, the rotor drives baling. Baling is started by force, making baling downtimes a thing of the past.

The perfect cut
Precisely chopped forage is much easier to compress and much easier to break apart. The VARIANT's 14-knif chopping rotor works with four pairs of dual tines, allowing the forage to be cut into small portions with great precision.

Baling Chamber

A full range of bale sizes
The VARIANT is designed to enable crops to be baled across a wide range of diameters: 36" to 68" on the VARIANT 280. You select the appropriate bale size by hand. In dry conditions, the bale diameter can be increased progressively so the fields can be cleared quicker by making the bales bigger. This also saves expense on wrapping materials.
One piece belts
The new style, endless belts are highly durable and can produce all types of bale sizes with various densities. These rugged CLAAS belts contribute to very high performace in heavy duty operation with the lowers possible cost per bale.
Five rigid, wide profile belts
This design spans the surface of the bales as fully as possible, reducing losses in brittle conditions. In addition, the extra driven width leads to extremely smooth running

All-round dependability
The professional equipment is impressive, even on the standard series. For instance, the belts are driven by two rubber-coated rollers with a gently profiled contact surface for maximum traction with no slippage.

Reliability comes first
The belts are very gently profiled for maximum traction, which means the crop is transported reliably and dry, brittle material is handled gently to avoid losses.

Tying

High speed wrapping
The round baler system must be stationary to wrap the bale. A stop that is as short as possible is one of the most important performance characteristics of the baler. The high speed belt of 8.8 ft/s wraps the bale up extremely fast, so that the baling process can start quickly again.

Everything in sight
Trust is good - control is better. For this reason, all CLAAS round balers feature good visibility from the front into the wrapping or tying area. This allows the driver to keep an eye on what's happening. Three rolls of new can be transported on the machine, enough wrapping material for a long working day.
Drives

The VARIANT drive system is extremely robust, making the highest baling densities possible in sustained, continuous operation withouth a breakdown occurring. Automatic chain lubrication, fitted as standard, prevents wear and tear.
Operation
User-friendly operation
All important functions are integrated within the control terminal. The bale counter and the left/right display are also ideally located in the driver's view. In addition, all automatic tying functions can be manually overridden.
